AI-Chatbot: A revolution in clinical support

chatbot
In recent years, Generative Artificial Intelligence has begun profoundly transforming the healthcare sector, offering new opportunities to address complex challenges. Among these, AI-based chatbots are proving to be promising tools to support clinicians in managing scientific and medical information.

Generative AI to Address Clinical Challenges

Generative AI is emerging as a powerful tool to tackle the challenges of modern medicine. AI-powered chatbots not only enhance efficiency but also serve as a "proof of concept" for how technological innovation can aid clinicians in addressing complex medical and scientific issues.

Thanks to their ability to process and synthesize large amounts of data, these systems provide effective decision-making support, improving both efficiency and empathy in care delivery. This article explores various case studies and practical applications serving as a concrete example of AI’s potential in clinical settings.

Proof-of-Concept Applications in Clinical Contexts

Here are some practical applications showcasing AI’s potential in clinical contexts:

  1. The Chatbot for Outpatient COVID-19 Management

In collaboration with the Internal Medicine physicians and researchers at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, the Run2AI team developed a virtual assistant to support General Practitioners in managing outpatient care for COVID-19 patients. This exploratory system, published in JJMIR Publications, demonstrates how generative AI was trained to provide personalized information to physicians based on specific clinical parameters, such as comorbidities and oxygen saturation levels. While still a preliminary project, the chatbot has proven the feasibility of integrating generative AI into complex contexts, paving the way for future large-scale applications.

  2. MedQuestio: Supporting Clinical Practice

MedQuestio is a professional search engine designed for General Practitioners and Pediatricians, offering immediate answers to clinical questions by extracting information from scientifically validated articles, endorsed by SIICP (the Italian Interdisciplinary Society for Primary Care). Unlike traditional search engines like PubMed, MedQuestio simplifies access to scientific information during medical practice, enabling physicians to quickly obtain reliable answers, improve diagnoses, and reduce the risk of errors. Its intuitive interface and ability to synthesize complex information make it a valuable ally in managing interdisciplinary cases.

  3. Study Published in "JAMA Internal Medicine"

A study published in  JAMA Internal Medicine, an international peer-reviewed journal, compared responses provided by physicians to those generated by OpenAI’s  ChatGPT for questions posed on a public forum. A team of healthcare professionals evaluated the responses based on the quality of information and the empathy conveyed across 585 questions.

The findings revealed that ChatGPT's responses were preferred in 78.6% of cases, with physician responses rated as 21% less informative and 41% less empathetic on average. This suggests that advanced AI systems can help physicians manage patient communication more effectively, reducing emotional strain and increasing efficiency.

Challenges for the Future

Generative AI faces several challenges, including scientific validation, response reliability, and patient data protection. Overcoming these will require investments in rigorous verification processes, adaptable modular systems, training programs, and user-friendly interfaces. Nevertheless, the potential of these tools to support clinicians is vast, ranging from improving the quality of care and diagnostics to strengthening doctor-patient relationships and reducing burnout.

Conclusion

The adoption of generative AI-based chatbots represents a unique opportunity to enhance clinical practice, address complex problems, and support physicians in their daily work. While challenges such as scientific validation and large-scale implementation remain, the analyzed proof-of-concept projects demonstrate this technology’s transformative potential.

Projects like the chatbot for managing outpatient COVID-19 patients pave the way for a new era in medicine, where technological innovation and human-centered approaches work in synergy to deliver increasingly effective and personalized care. Looking ahead, generative AI could become an essential component of clinical tools, redefining how medical knowledge is utilized and applied in practice.
